Fifth Grade Teachers
David De Vore

This is year 27 at Torrey Pines teaching fifth grade for me and what a ride it has been. I have seen so much growth at TPES; it is such a great reward to see so many kids come through and then come back to tell of their success after they move on.
I grew up in Poway, went to UC Davis for my undergraduate work, and taught a year and a half in Japan before coming to San Diego Unified. Both of my parents were teachers and got me started in bringing a great boost of fun and engaging learning activities to the kids in fifth grade. My wife is from Japan and I have two daughters, one a freshman in high school and the other a yoga teacher/massage therapist in Portland. I also have two dogs at home that keep me on my toes as well. I enjoy surfing, golfing, and watching my daughter play high level soccer.
It is such a pleasure to have been at TPES these many years and I look forward to more years of fun teaching the kids in the community.

Being a teacher at TPES means I am part of a unique community. Being a 5th grade teacher means I get to be part of the lives of the children of this neighborhood. I get to help students come into their own. As their last teacher before middle school, I get to help give students confidence and strength to go into the world ready to advocate for themselves. Also, as a 5th grade teacher at TPES, I get the chance to make the last year of elementary school a very fun one for my students.
